Driveway Resurfacing vs Replacement: When Does an Overlay Fail?

Driveway resurfacing vs replacement: the soundness checks that decide whether an overlay will hold, and the cost difference in the OKC metro.

By OKC Driveway Repair Co. · Updated

Short answer: Resurface when the slab is level, mostly crack-free and solid, and only the surface is flaking, scaling or pitted. Replace when panels are sunken or rocking, cracks are wider than ¼ inch or stepped, or the base is failing. In Oklahoma City resurfacing costs about $3 to $7 per square foot against $8 to $13 for replacement.

OKC Driveway Repair Co. resurfaces and replaces concrete driveways across Oklahoma City, and turns down resurfacing jobs that wouldn’t last. Driveway resurfacing vs replacement comes down to one thing: whether the concrete under the surface is still sound. An overlay is only ever as good as the slab it’s bonded to.

The cost difference

Resurfacing Replacement
OKC price (2026) $3 – $7 per sq ft $8 – $13 per sq ft
480 sq ft two-car drive About $1,450 – $3,350 About $3,800 – $6,200
Time out of use 2 – 3 days About 7 days after the pour
Fixes the base? No Yes

Resurfacing works when

  • The slab is level. No sunken, tilted or rocking panels.
  • Cracks are narrow and stable, under ¼ inch with both sides level, and can be routed and sealed first.
  • The concrete is solid. A chain drag or hammer tap finds no hollow, delaminated areas over a large share of the drive.
  • The damage is on the surface: scaling, flaking, pitting, popouts, or stains.
  • Water drains off instead of standing.

Surface scaling is common in the metro. Oklahoma City averages 71 days a year at or below freezing but only about 8 that stay frozen all day (NWS normals), so water in the top of the slab freezes and thaws repeatedly. Concrete poured without air entrainment flakes under that cycling while the slab below stays strong. That’s exactly what resurfacing is for.

Resurfacing fails when

  • Panels are sunken or moving. The overlay cracks along every joint and settlement line.
  • Cracks are wide, growing or stepped. They reflect through the overlay within a season or two.
  • Large areas sound hollow. The overlay is bonding to a layer that’s already coming loose.
  • The base is washing out or soft. Nothing on top fixes what’s underneath.
  • The prep is skipped. Overlays on dirty, sealed or unprofiled concrete peel.

A middle path

Many drives aren’t all one or the other. A few sunken panels can be leveled or replaced first, the cracks sealed, and then the whole surface resurfaced so it looks uniform. That costs more than resurfacing alone but less than full replacement, and it only makes sense when most of the slab is sound.

Bottom line

Resurface a sound, level slab that’s only worn on top; replace one that’s sunken, cracked through or failing underneath. The test comes first. For a soundness check and a quote on both, call (405) 442-4044 or see driveway resurfacing and driveway replacement.

Related questions

How long does a resurfaced driveway last compared to a new one?

On a sound slab, a polymer-modified overlay can last many years, but it will not outlast the concrete under it. A new driveway built on a proper base has a 20- to 35-year expected life. Resurfacing buys time on a good slab; it doesn't reset the clock on a failing one.

Can resurfacing fix a driveway that holds water?

Not reliably. An overlay follows the slab's existing slope, and only thin layers can be built up. Standing water usually means settled panels or bad drainage, which leveling or replacement addresses.

Why did my driveway resurfacing peel off?

Usually poor preparation or a slab that wasn't sound. Overlays bond to a clean, profiled surface; put over dirt, sealer, delaminated concrete or moving cracks, they peel, crack or pop off within a season or two.
